Career Advice - Make a change

Updated: Aug 22, 2018

Thinking about changing your job or career? If you are, it is important to stop to think about your motives and to make sure you are doing it for the right reasons.

Here are five things to consider before making that leap. The answers can also help formulate a list of what you are looking for in a new role AND help you get interview ready.

1. What exactly is driving you to want to leave your current role? Think about whether your heart is still in it. If not, sit down and try to pinpoint the areas that make you feel satisfied and rewarded and also list areas that make you unhappy.

2. Are you feeling undervalued and want more opportunities to advance in your current career? Are you starting to feel overlooked for important promotions or advancements within the Company? Is the Company offering you the correct career path? Are they providing you with a career development plan to match your own personal career goals?

3. Do the Company’s values and culture match your own? Some people don’t realise this is a ‘thing’ until they work for an organisation where Management don’t ‘walk it like they talk it’. If there is a mismatch that compromises your values, it's time to look for a Company that does match your own.

4. Are you wanting to make more money? After research, your current salary doesn’t meet the current benchmark in the market. If you need a salary increase that your employer just can’t accommodate, it’s likely you’ll have to look elsewhere.

5. Are You Being Heard? Finding it difficult to get your ideas heard by Management? Or you just can’t seem to get approvals or acknowledgment for the great work you are doing. Basically, you feel you are being ignored and it might be time to look for a new job.
